9TH RALLY EDITION: OCTOBER 10 – 19, 2024

#114

Snowstorm

Working in the Emergency Department in Whistler, Canada landing helicopters from the mountains, taking patients out, working together in the trauma room. Rachel is a Snowbiker, dirtbiker, snowboarder, water sports enthusiast and Joanne is a Level 4 ski instructor, races motorcycles on the racetrack, and helicopter enthusiast, so naturally the conversations flowed and the first thing Jo ever asked me was “Can you teach me how to drive a dirtbike and I’ll teach you how to drive a motorcycle on the track?” and a year later she came to me with a second question, “Do you want to be my rally partner in the Rebelle Rally”. Being we haven’t driven on the track yet, I figure I’d better take her up on the Rally!

Fun Fact:

I asked my daughter to write a fun fact about me, this is her reply: You're an ageless being and the possibility of you being an alien has not yet been confirmed or denied. You have elf ears, your eyes have changed colour, you can build literally any piece of furniture and make any sort of dish, you would thrive in a post-apocalyptic world, you've been paralyzed and are fine, and you can whistle really loud.

Why the Rebelle? Why now?

I was working at the Overland Rally in Merrit BC in 2022 with Overland Training Canada and Chris encouraged me to attend the Rebelle Sessions. Emily pulled me aside and said she believed that we had met before. I was quite sure our paths had not crossed yet. She said 32 years ago (I believe that was the date) we had sat in a bar called Merlins at the base of Blackcomb and had a drink together with our friends. She remembered because of my certification as an Instructor and she was competing in her first Big Mountain competition in Canada. I decided that I needed to do the Rebelle for sure at that moment. When was the next question. So I decided there was no time like the present.

Who, or what, inspires you most?

For this rally my inspiration is my Dad who is no longer with us. He was one of the most winningest rally drivers in Central Alberta in the 1970s and his longest rally was 2000 Miles. I feel this rally is the closest I come to experiencing what he did and I am so looking forward to it. We are hoping he joins us in spirit. People who live life and don't let life pass by inspire me, I love hearing their stories.

Why the Rebelle? Why now?

Constantly working on projects to support women in sport and motorsports- The name "Rebel" and "Elle" align with my mindset of being the rebel who stirs the pot to move things forward for women in different sports. If not now, when?

Who, or what, inspires you most?

Florence Nightingale- she defied the expectations of her time, being a social reformer and was the foundational philosopher of modern nursing.
