9TH RALLY EDITION: OCTOBER 10 – 19, 2024

#129

4xEventure

We know each other from Moab and from a Ladies Offroad Network Challenge. Nena competed in the inaugural Rebelle in 2016, and Teralin went on to compete in 2017 with Kaleigh Miller. Nena was competing along with Chris Mayne (2017) and all four women became great friends and friendly competitors. With Rebelles, it always works around that teammates come and go with life paths, and Nena and Teralin teaming up was always an option, but became reality in 2021 when Miller decided not to compete and Nena’s other former teammates had other plans (Chris staying in France and Tana competing for Kia). Having spent so much time as competitors, it was a quick fit to work together as teammates. We have many memorable moments, both as competitors and teammates. Some of our catch phrases that have become known are “No talkie-talkie” which means it’s time to stop chatting and get to work, and when things get a little tense in the car, we do an overly-emphasized calming arm squeeze, which immediately makes us giggle and breaks the tension. Tense for us is not interpersonal, it’s a moment of indecision on directions, or confusion about the map, or something that takes us down a mental rabbit hole. Some of our best F-ups are some of our best lessons. Like the time we over-confidently clicked where we thought the blue was supposed to be then called it in only to be told “You aren’t where you think you are”–a brief moment of terror, followed by a big slice of humble pie, which we so deserved because we had so half-assed naving to that spot. Then there was the time Nena incorrectly transposed numbers on the coordinates conversion, and Teralin incorrectly transposed them while plotting, and then we actually nailed the CP, because our two wrongs made a right! We have MUCH to laugh about, and enjoy (nearly) every moment of the rally.

Why the Rebelle? Why now?

It pushes me to be my best. It makes me look at my own stuff and decide how I am going to react. It's like a game of "here's this unexpected twist--how are you going to deal with THIS?" But at the same time, it's a break from the real world of being pulled in multiple directions. The Rebelle gives you a chance to just focus on one thing for a week. So, in that sense, it's like a vacation!

Who, or what, inspires you most?

I am inspired by people who are strong, but also acknowledge their mistakes and weaknesses, humble and don't pretend they know everything, constantly looking to learn more.

Why the Rebelle? Why now?

Since competing in 2017, I haven't wanted to miss out. The Rebelle has become a favorite part of my life. I love seeing everybody, and competing alongside them. I love seeing what new things Emily will throw our way.

Who, or what, inspires you most?

Seeing people around me working hard toward improvement inspires me. I'm also inspired most by those helping others along the way.
