When Kristin Shaw signed up for her first Rebelle Rally in 2022, she had no idea how much the experience would reshape her career and confidence. Three years and three rallies later, she is living what she calls her “dream come true,” writing for top automotive outlets, testing vehicles off-road, and saying yes to adventures she once would not have dared to try.
Before the Rebelle, Kristin’s career in automotive journalism was still gaining momentum. Competing changed everything.
“Since I first competed in the Rebelle Rally, my career has taken off. I started writing for Popular Science, Edmunds, Car and Driver, and Road & Track. More automakers take my experience seriously and invite me to test their products off-road.”
That credibility did not just open doors. It solidified Kristin’s place in a field she loves.
While she has not faced a challenge tougher than the Rebelle, the rally gave Kristin a deep well of confidence to draw from.
“There are so many things I did not know I could do before the first Rebelle. I did not know I could drive for eight straight days. I did not know I could camp out in 16-degree weather. I did not know I could figure out so many more things. Being a Rebelle means I am less afraid to try.”
That mindset has her eyeing new goals, including a road race that has been on her bucket list.
If she could go back to 2022 Kristin, she would keep it simple.
“Give yourself some grace. You are going to make mistakes and just being a part of the Rebelle makes you a winner. You are competing against yourself, not everyone else. And most of all, know that the friendships you make during the rally are going to be some of the most impactful of your life.”
Sometimes it is the smallest moments that bring it all rushing back.
“The other day, I was walking toward my car and my keys jangled against my water bottle, creating a cowbell sound. I was immediately transported to the sights, sounds, smells, and feelings of waking up at 5 AM and emerging from the tent to look up at the stars.”
Kristin was 51 when she first entered the Rebelle, her first-ever off-road competition. She walked away with a best friend, a stronger belief in herself, and a deep appreciation for the women around her.
“Being a Rebelle has unquestionably changed my life. It is one of the best things that ever happened to me.”
