Team Tuesday 2019: Karah & Rachael

Team 207 Record The Journey

Rachael Ridenour and Team Record The Journey are back for their fourth year at the Rebelle Rally, but don’t be fooled into thinking you have this team all figured out. Last year’s Team Spirit Award co-winner and all around badass is back, but with a new teammate and a new vehicle. Rachael’s teammate this year is Karah Behrend, an Air Force veteran and adaptive athlete. The two met when Rachael saw a video of Karah on social media where she was stuck in the mud in a UTV. “I asked if she was interested in doing more off-roading and it went from there.”

Karah was raised in Badenton, Florida and Guilford, Connecticut and currently resides in Houston. “I want to show anyone, no matter what, can compete in the Rebelle if they are willing to train hard and put their mind towards it,” Karah shared. The retired Senior Airman and Air Force Wounded Warriors Program member spends her free time playing wheelchair rugby, so she isn’t afraid of getting dirty at the Rebelle Rally. Karah is most looking forward to those dark desert skies. “I saw the stars while we were training in Arizona and they were amazing without all the normal light pollution!”

Rachael confesses that she is nervous about her fulltime role as navigator at the Rebelle Rally, a first for her. The secret weapon? Coffee! “If you know me even a little bit you know that I use the military planning system known as “PACE” for my coffee.
P: Primary Coffee will be Cafe Moto made with a Bialetti Moka Espresso pot
A: Alternate Coffee will be a camping French press
C: Contingency Coffee will be coffee in a can (double shots)
E: Emergency Coffee will be instant coffee I mix with hot water”

It is also Team Record The Journey’s first time in the Crossover Class. The two third generation veterans will be competing in the Crossover Class in a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross that has been outfitted with hand controls for Karah. The first Mitsubishi to compete in the Rebelle Rally, the Eclipse Cross generates power from an innovative 1.5L direct injected turbocharged engine and combines all-wheel-drive performance with active stability control and active yaw control, offering stable and responsive handling in all conditions they expect to encounter at the Rebelle Rally.

Jeep® Returns as Media and Awards Partner of the 2019 Rebelle Rally

October 2, 2019 (Reno, NV) – As the Rebelle Rally quickly approaches, Jeep® returns to support the women’s off-road navigation endurance competition. The iconic four-wheel drive brand is the 2019 media and awards partner for the 10-day event that is scheduled October 10-19, 2019.

Jeep, synonymous with adventure and capability, is a favorite vehicle among Rebelles and successful as well. Two Jeep Wrangler Rubicons were co-champions in the 4×4 Class in the 2018 rally, and Jeep has held the top of the podium since the rally began in 2016. 12 Jeep vehicles are registered in this year’s edition in the sold out field of 40 teams.

“Jeep is such an iconic brand, and an excellent vehicle choice for the Rebelle Rally. We have been impressed with how many women have bought Jeep vehicles specifically with the intention of competing in the Rebelle,” noted rally founder Emily Miller. “We appreciate Jeep recognizing our committed community and efforts to build a true proving ground for stock OEM vehicles.”

The rally starts next week, on Thursday, October 10th with Tech Inspection at Olympic Valley, California, adjacent to Lake Tahoe. The event will cover 8 days of competition that traverses the western portion of Nevada and crosses into southern California to finish in the Imperial Sand Dunes. Team Tuesday 2019: Rori & Tiffany

Does off-roading, exploring, and causing a little chaos spark joy in your life? Then you’ll relate to today’s Team Tuesday. Rori Lewis and Tiffany Walker are entering third year Rebelle territory this October, along with Tiffany’s TOTAL CHAOS equipped FJ. This team loves adventure, stretching past comfort zones into new territory, and learning new skills whenever, wherever.

Another cool aspect? Like many others, Rori and Tiffany came together just for the Rebelle Rally. They met only twice before competing together as a team in 2017. And have been coming together every year since for the Rebelle Rally. Hailing from Hesperia, CA and Colorado Springs, CO, please welcome Team #154 Roads Less Traveled!

Rori is from Hesperia where she currently resides. As the Administrative Assistant at TOTAL CHAOS Fab, Rori gets up close and personal with all things off-road on a daily basis – and loves it.

Going into year three, Rori is feeling prepared. She’s working out, eating, training, navigating as much as possible, and hitting the trails when she can – a little different approach for them this year when it comes to training.

She’s also going in stoked to be back with Tiffany. “It’s pretty amazing that someone would be willing to go back with me a third year. I know I can be a difficult person no matter how much my navigational skills improve each year. It’s hard to imagine doing it with anyone else!”

And she’s coming back to simply experience the Rebelle all over again.”The Rebelle is an amazing experience that I think all women should experience because you can learn a lot about yourself in eight days driving through Mother Nature shut off from the world. Not to mention it’s our third year competing, and we are hoping to be better than ever!”

Although she’s a bit nervous about “epically failing,” it’s because Rori has specific goals to reach in mind for this year. Something to combat her nerves? A picture of her dogs she’s not leaving home without! Along with peppered beef jerky for protein pick-me-up.

Tiffany is originally from Topeka, Kansas and calls Colorado Springs home for 13 years. Tiffany occupation is in Child Advocacy and Employee Engagement..and she also just happend to hit the half-time mark – 50! So when she’s not working, she’s stretching herself in ways that might not be so comfortable. She also loves off-roading with her husband Tom, and is eager to apply her learnings from the past two years to this year’s rally.

How does she feel entering her third Rebelle? “Surprisingly calm. And more mentally prepared. I think the last-minute decision to participate this year didn’t allow for me to get in my head about things early on and approach this years’ competition much more methodically.”

Being a Kansas-to-Tennessee-to-Oregon-to-Colorado girl, Tiffany told us the dunes always make her nervous because she has little experience driving them. “Maybe I should say, it’s a healthy respect!”

Tiffany is looking forward to making up for last year’s difficulties this year, and leaning in to what she learned about herself, her teammate, and her rig.

Speaking of her rig, she’s bringing her very capable 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser. She’s been off-roading in the FJ for so many years, so it’s really become an extension of her. She knows her quirks…and the FJ knows Tiffany’s! Plus, she’s equipped with a Total Chaos 2″ Expedition series long travel kit and suspension. How can it get any better?!

Tiffany is not leaving home  without her memory foam pillow and her  XPed sleeping mat. We can confirm Tiffany is 100% correct when she states, “Sleep is the magic sauce!”

Team Tuesday 2019: Noelle & Lola

Today’s Team Tuesday has been friends for 20 years, are travel buddies, share a love for adventure, and can soon add Rebelle teammates to their resumé.

Piloting a bright yellow 2015 Subaru Crosstrek, Team #201 Noelle Sanders and Lisa “Lola” Wolford are ready to tackle the mental and physical challenge of the Rebelle. As first time competitors they are, in their own words, “ready to rally!” With that said, let’s meet Noelle and Lola!

Noelle is from Phoenix, Arizona and currently lives in Chandler where she is an Environmental Consultant. She’s competing in the Rebelle because Lola made her do it! Given Noelle loves wildlife, campfires, new friendships, and adventure, we’re pretty sure she’ll be right in her element.

What is Noelle most nervous about? “Tremors, like in the movie with Kevin Bacon. Those creatures are scary” (you are not alone in that sentiment, Noelle.) And she’s not leaving home without her Chapstick which, speaking of scary, is very scary to leave at home when you’re entering ten days of desert life.

Lola is from Kent City, Michigan and resides in Tempe Arizona where she is a flight attendant.

And she’s (happily) going through a midlife crisis as we speak. “I’m having the best midlife crisis ever! I need a challenge that is both mental, physical and where I learn new skills. Going into the Rebelle, I’m the most fabulously scared I’ve ever been, and loving it.”

Lola has a love for motorsports which came from her mother, who was Nascar while Lola’s a NHRA gal. She’s also a big fan and supporter of  live, local music, which “soothes her soul.” And, if she’s not busy enough, she and her husband have also hosted 50 international students from 10 different countries over the past 14 years.

Lola’s looking forward to applying her new skills, meeting all of the competitors, and exploring new territory on the ground for a change during the Rebelle.

And speaking of the rally…don’t ask Lola about those early morning wake-up calls! As a natural night owl who loves working the red eye flights, she’s definitely nervous about that 5am cowbell.

What is Lola not leaving home without? Her vintage 1973 Big Boy piggybank. He literally has been all over the world with Lola. Coins from her travels are places inside.

We’re looking forward to having these two join us in the dirt in just a few short weeks!

Strong Vehicle Manufacturer Participation for October’s Rebelle Rally

Vehicle Manufacturers Continue to Build Strong Participation in the 2019 Rebelle Rally

September 10, 2019 (Reno, NV) – The 4th annual Rebelle Rally kicks off October 10th in Olympic Valley, California with a strong lineup of vehicle manufacturer participation. The 10-day navigation rally is a unique test of woman and machine as teams of two drive and navigate across Nevada and California to the U.S.—Mexico border. Final events will take place along the water’s edge in San Diego.

The competition is not a race for speed, but a true test of traditional navigation skills in street legal, unmodified or minimally modified SUVs, trucks and CUVs.  The event has focused on providing a strong platform for manufacturer vehicles to shine. This year, programs and support have been fielded from Jeep, Honda, Nissan, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, and Mitsubishi, with more expected before the October date.

OEM involvement has taken multiple forms – from fielding teams and providing vehicles, to in-depth engineering programs from companies such as Honda. “We have been laser focused in our commitment to build a multi-pronged platform for companies,” noted rally founder and promoter Emily Miller. “While some mistakenly assume it is limited to a women’s marketing program, we have created the longest competitive rally in the lower 48, with an in-house developed real-time vehicle data visualization platform for manufacturers with our partner Mapbox, strong company leadership and teamwork development, to tremendous experiential and content opportunities.”

The Details

Jeep returns as a committed partner with sponsorship and presentation of the Awards Ceremony at San Diego’s Broadway Pier. Honda returns with four female engineers as they use the experience for product development purposes in the Honda Ridgeline and Honda Passport. Nissan will field three-time Rebelle Sedona Blinson with teammate and automotive journalist Lyn Woodward in the Nissan Armada. Porsche returns with 2018 CUV class winners. Rolls-Royce stunned many by entering the new Cullinan with 2018 Co-Champions Emme Hall and Rebecca Donaghe.  Mitsubishi has entered an impressive team of military women – three-time Rebelle and Team Spirit Award winner Rachael Ridenour and teammate Karah Behrend, a retired young woman who served in the Air Force, and is an inspirational adaptive athlete who competes in multiple sports in a wheelchair. Behrend will drive the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross with hand controls in the CUV Class.

While the course is confidential until the rally, friends and fans can follow the event via social, daily updates, live narrative mapping, live tracking, and webcast.  Log on to www.rebellerally.com and mark the calendars for October 10-19th.

Strong Vehicle Manufacturer Participation for October’s Rebelle Rally2019-09-11T12:12:21-08:00

Team Tuesday 2019: Anna & Andrea

Better together? Passion and perseverance. Today’s Team Tuesday shares both qualities, and those grit factors led them to their Rebelle Rally return this year.

Anna Lewis (and her sweet FJ) is competing in her second Rebelle, and Andrea Shaffer is coming back for year three. The two met in 2017 during the rally while on separate teams, and came together naturally in 2019 to tackle unfinished business, and utilize their skills jointly as driver and navigator. With an appreciation for the outdoors and each other, we can’t wait to have this duo back in the dirt with us. So let’s welcome them back – but don’t call it a comeback!

Anna’s hometown is Elkins, Arkansas, and she currently resides in Turlock, California where she’s Technical Services Food Director for a food manufacturing company.

Anna loves to off-road in her spare time, along with gardening and doing crafts. And she’s competing this year with a sense of unfinished business. In 2017, she was learning to compete and “learn the ropes.” Now with one rally under her belt and knowing how to compete, this year is more about working hard together as a team.

Aside from the off-road and adventure part of the rally, Anna’s favorite thing about the Rebelle is the women and staff that are brought together for the event. “It is amazing to have that caliber of individuals all focused on one event. I also really loved seeing so many cool areas throughout the west.”

And she can’t wait to compete with Andrea.

“We met during the 2017 Rebelle Rally. My initial memory of Andrea was her hiking to a checkpoint in Dumont Dunes while her teammate was working on their vehicle. Her grit and determination to get as many points as possible even with adversity showed me what an awesome lady she is.”

Anna forsees her biggest challenge as time management, mentioning they’ll have to have a game plan for all situations. And she’s not leaving home without her FJ Cruiser, Hot Hands, and a great sleeping pad!

Andrea was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV where she currently lives with her family. She multi-tasks with two jobs – stay-at-home mom, and vinyl business owner. Andrea also loves to camp, explore the outdoors with her husband and kids, and go bowling. She’s super excited to head back to the rally after a “year off,” calling it one of her best adventures to date.

“Anna and I met during the 2017 Rebelle Rally. We started talking again while stalking the 2018 Rebelle. We just clicked! And I’m excited to get back to the community that is the Rebelle. I love the family we become during the week, and even after.”

Andrea knows there may be a challenge in the fact that they’re a new to each other team, but is focusing on working together to do the best they can. An she’s not leaving home without her plotter, snacks, and map wheel!

Meet Steven duBois, Brand Manager of AIRAID – 2019 Rebelle Rally Premier Partner

HACK THE HOOD.

2019 Rebelle Premier Partner AIRAID has had a pivotal role for 20+ years in the automotive aftermarket industry. Key factors? High quality products, a performance minded line-up, breathing new life into adventure, and a commitment to all of the above – thanks to the people behind the brand.

We recently sat down with Steven duBois, AIRAID Brand Manager, to discuss the new look fueled by passion, quality, style, and stoke. And if you’re curious about the benefits of having top quality intake systems and filters, this one’s for you. Steven let us in to why it’s in an automotive enthusiast’s best interest, and also gave us some great insight into how they’re taking that black and yellow next level this year. And perhaps this October as well..stay tuned.

Tell us about Airaid’s pivotal role of 20+ years in the automotive aftermarket industry.

Airaid has always strived to bring the highest quality products to the outdoor, off-road, and late model American muscle car enthusiasts. All Airaid products are made in the USA and designed with functionality, performance and quality in mind. Airaid is well known for their closed intake boxes which helps prolong the life of the filter, brings more aesthetic appeal, while also increasing the time between cleanings. Recently, Airaid has taken lead on advocating passion back into the Automotive Aftermarket Industry. People modify their cars because they see something more than just a vehicle that gets them from “A to B” and we want to highlight and build off of that notion with the support of partners and teams that are aligned with the passion that surrounds the automotive enthusiast.

The benefits of having top quality intake systems and filters are countless for a vehicle. Why?

It all starts with the filter. When you turn your key and crank the starter the engine is sucking filtered air in like a pump to mix with fuel for ignition. Making sure the air that goes in is clean is a no brainer, but how about the performance side? Let me paint a picture for you; You’re running a marathon, but all you get to breathe through is a small hose the size of a pencil. Will you suffocate? No, but you will definitely be strained and tired after the race. Now imaging midway through the race taking the hose and running normally with your nose and mouth for air. Much better right? That’s kind of what Airaid does, without affecting filtration by use of our Cotton and SynthamaxⓇ filter media.

And new products or innovations you’d like to let us in on?

Yellow Filters! Airaid is taking the “black and yellow” style to the next level!

We love the new look. Tell us about the message behind it.

In short, Passion, Quality and Style. We want our consumers to sense the passion behind the brand when they open and Airaid box and install it on their vehicle, and to be stoked on the quality of the product.

What’s the best part about working for a company like Airaid?

Again passion. While we are a business and sales is our focus, we never lose sight of the purpose of the message we bring to our consumers.

There are a ton of events to consider. Why the Rebelle?

We’re fans of Rebelle’s focus on female offroad and outdoor enthusiasts and love the idea of the Rally. Stay tuned for more on this subject.

As an automotive parts “connoisseur,” name three parts you believe every Rebelle should have in their competition vehicle?

Intake of course! Seriously though, such an easy affordable way to snag some more horsepower out of your vehicle.  And exhaust.  Also an easy way to gain performance and improve the sound of your vehicle.  Third, a winch. Probably one of the first purchases of any off roader out there!

Lastly, any words of wisdom?

Never forget your roots and the passions in life that you grew up with.

Gearing up for the 4th Rebelle Rally

August 2019 Newsletter

ROCKY MOUNTAIN OVERLAND RALLY

We just wrapped up the first Rocky Mountain Overland Rally in Gunnsion, Colorado.  Rebelle founder Emily Miller was on hand to teach Rebelle U courses including drive training, compass and map navigation and our new and popular GPS and GPS apps class. From novices to experienced, there was something for every level and that’s what always makes these trainings so effective. In total, we had 167 people attend! A huge thank you to all that came out including Rebelle Creative Director Katy Kunkel, Rebelles, future Rebelles and our sponsors Chocoloveand Suunto for providing much-needed classroom supplies. Thanks to TOTAL CHAOS Fabrication and to Ray Hyland and his crew for an amazing first-time event. Put it on your calendar for 2020. See you next year, Gunnison!

REBELLE AND JOURNALIST LYN WOODWARD WINS BIG

On the heels of being a finalist for the 2018 Press Guild Excellence in Automotive Journalism Awards, Lyn just won an Automotive Heritage Award for Best Heritage Travel/Adventure Story for her Rebelle Rally article! A huge congrats to Lyn for another accolade well-deserved on her incredibly raw and poignant first-person account on the Rebelle in The Drive.  Not only was Lyn a 2017 Rebelle, she just entered the 2019 competition and we can’t wait to see her back in the dirt.

THE ECO & VALUE OF WELL-BUILT PRODUCTS

AIRAID – Wash, Rinse, Repeat

Think about every time you go to get your oil changed, often the tech recommends or replaces your air filter.  But why?  Does your vehicle need it?  Is it an upsell? That’s why we use AIRAIDwashable, reusable filters.  Made out of premium materials, check it every 30,000-50,000 miles, then wash it and re-install.  Wash, Rinse Repeat.

Over 100,000 filters end up in landfills annually.  By supporting Rebelle partner AIRAID, you can be an active part of preventing unnecessary waste.  And…they’re made in the USA, not shipped across the globe further adding to the product footprint.  Buy online or use the dealer locater @ https://www.airaid.com/air-filters.

CORKCICLE IS BACK
& saving Rebelles countless throwaway bottles

It’s always exciting to welcome a sponsor, but when that sponsor is a three-year supporter, it’s extra special for us. We’re thrilled to announce Corkcicle, our go-to for everything to-go, is back for year three! Corkcicle canteens and tumblers are Rebelle-tested, suited perfectly to our reuse principals, and have been with us through freezing cold, extreme heat, and everything in between. Corkcicle’s unique approach of pushing boundaries in its field is always a crowd pleaser on the Rebelle.

“Corkcicle is honored to support Rebelle Rally and the organization’s commitment to supporting women in competition,” said Corkcicle Senior Marketing Manager Kimberly Devitt. “Just as Rebelle Rally has challenged the status quo by being the first ever first women’s off-road navigation rally raid in the U.S., Corkcicle’s fashion-forward products have revolutionized the drinkware category with innovative design and a mission to complement personal style with social responsibility.” Corkcicle will once again be providing their popular Rebelle-branded canteens to competitors…just another reason to register for this October!

DMOS CRUSHES IT ON KICKSTARTER

To say we’re stoked on Rebelle sponsor DMOS is an understatement. And it comes as no surprise their recent Kickstarter launched them next level with their ultimate tool to-date – the Delta shovel. The purpose-built Delta, an off-road tool with the highest of quality, just broke $100K less than a week after the Kickstarter launch. We always say we don’t leave home without our DMOS shovel, and the Delta will be no exception.  Buying virtually indestructible products is not just a safety consideration, it makes long-term sense on so many levels.

BONUS? It comes in Rebelle Blue, and was launched by badass entreprenuer and 2018/2019 Rebelle Susan Pieper. Be part of it all here.

Gearing up for the 4th Rebelle Rally2019-08-06T12:49:17-08:00

Team Tuesday 2019: Debbie & Maria

The mother-daughter bond is like no other, and today’s Team Tuesday is taking it next level by competing in the Rebelle – together. With 2018 Rebelle Maria Guitar participating alongside her mother Debbie Bruen as Team #114 Sand Cats Rally Team, they’re not afraid of a little digital detox. And their chosen third teammate? Maria’s 98’ Toyota 4Runner. Please welcome Debbie and Maria!

Debbie is originally from the Bronx and now resides in Raleigh, NC. where she owns Home Organization by Debbie and is a design consultant. Debbie has not competed in the Rebelle, but that doesn’t mean she’s not familiar with it. In true mom fashion, Debbie was glued to her computer last year watching Maria’s every move on the rally tracker. And now she will be the one out in the middle of nowhere finding her way – alongside the only person she’d do it with.

It all began when Debbie flew out to join Maria at Rebellation last year. Caught up in the competitors’ excitement, when Maria asked Debbie to be her 2019 teammate Debbie quickly responded, “Sure!” after a few gin and tonics. The next morning, she realized what she had done (relatable). So here she is now, learning how to read maps, and there is no one else she’d would trust to be her partner than Maria.

She’s also excited to explore parts of the west that are brand new to her, and get back to her desert roots.

“I lived in the desert region of the Turkana District in Northwest Kenya for over 12 years, where I learned to love the desert. My driving gear was just a loose dress (the culture) and flip-flops. And we avoided driving on the sand dunes if possible. We had a Toyota Hilux and always kept a machete under the front seat. I once buried the truck up to the axles in mud, which is when we pulled out the machete, hacked away at palm fronds, and positioned them below the tires to get out of the mud. We never heard of MAXTRAX – how they would’ve made life so much easier!”

Although she’s a little nervous to test her skills in the rally, Debbie has complete confidence in her multi-talented daughter.  And she’s not leaving home without her bible and and LOTS of Ziploc bags!

Maria is originally from Kenya and now calls Ostrander, Ohio home. She’s an Engine Test Engineer at Honda and cannot wait to get back in the Rebelle after competing in 2018.

“The Rebelle embodies many things that I love in life – adventure, maps, and problem solving that challenges you to become better than you were yesterday. I love being off grid, knowing where I am, not just because a GPS tells me but because of the ability to utilize a compass and map.”

This is the first time Maria is competing in her 4Runner. She’s a little nervous with it being 21 years old, but is putting it through the paces now and making certain appropriate modifications are complete prior to the rally. She has confidence her “super awesome” 4Runner will be good to go!

Maria is also looking forward reuniting with the community of Rebelles.

“Having the wonderful comradery of strong, brave women who come together for this event is amazing, the feeling is like nothing else! And coming back for round two is exciting. I had the time of my life last year; it is such a wonderful and empowering experience, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with my mom!”

She’s also looking forward to having some serious vehicle time with her mom as they always have a blast together. And Maria’s must have item? A photo of her husband and cat!

Maria welcome back to the Rebelle and Debbie – buckle up for an adventure like nothing else!
